MANILA, Philippines—Meralco’s had some issues with its depleted roster to begin the PBA Commissioner’s Cup against Phoenix at Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Friday.

Fortunately, the Bolts got back the services of Aaron Black following key players going down with various injuries. Among those who were on the sidelines were CJ Cansino, Brandon Bates, Cliff Hodge and Allein Maliksi.

Black, who suffered an ACL injury two conferences ago in the Philippine Cup, though, admitted it was mentally hard for him to spring back into action after  his tragic knee mishap.

After Friday, it’s safe to say that he got over the mental hump helping push the Bolts to a 111-109 comeback win over the Fuel Masters.

“Mentallyph365, coming back from an operation like that [was tough], I haven’t had an operation in a long time, especially in my knee. I’m just grateful for the guys who found me today,” said Black.

“I’m happy and blessed to be back. It took me some long ways to get there and I’m glad I can get back on the basketball court and help them win.”

In Meralco’s conference-opening win, Black posted 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 29 minutes of action, playing like he wasn’t hurt to begin with. He also flaunted his efficiency from the field with a 60 percent field goal shooting clip.

However, coach Luigi Trillo said that Black wasn’t exactly planning to play as long as he did.

“Aaron’s not supposed to be getting these many minutes but we have guys down. It’s nice to see him back,” said the coach.

Fortunately, the Bolts had some ample jolt from import Akil Mitchell, who posted a double-double of 27 points and 13 rebounds.

Chris Newsome, who scattered 23 points, also lauded Black for returning to action in victorious fashion.

“It was great to see AB go out there and play again after everything he went through,” said the Gilas guard.

“Mentally, it was a lot for him. He struggled a bit but he got his rhythm back and he contributed to the team [was good],” added Newsome.
